The airlock cycled and let them out into the cold, and the cold came through the environmental suit like it was barely there, the deep piercing cold of a place that had not seen warmth in quite some time. Zedd stepped down onto the deck of Cube for the first time in his life. The helmet lamps went a few meters into the darkness and disappeared into a void, and what they caught on the way only caught the typical Borg conduit and plating. He kept his mouth shut and let Ragnar set the pace, because this was Ragnar's team and Ragnar's call on how they moved. Zedd had agreed to that before they ever suited up.
Mei-Lin had her built in scanner on full power, throwing the numbers across the inside of her visor. She'd wanted a hand held scanner but trusted her new suit even more. "We're in a dead section, confirmed" she said, her voice flat and focused. "No power, no heat, nothing drawing anywhere near us. The ship's holding right where we left her, forty meters back." The sensor unit rotated slowly as she swept it down the corridor ahead. "It stays dead about forty meters that way. After that I start reading power. Not much. But it's there and that's the the limit of advance until Ragnar says otherwise."
Zedd looked down the black throat of the corridor toward the far bends where, somewhere past the reach of the lamps, this thing was still faintly alive. He was very focused on of every one of the forty meters between here and there. "Understood" he said, low, for Ragnar's benefit as much as anyone's. He was a passenger on this part and he knew it, one more body, at the moment more of an observer than a Captain but still here for his read on the salvage once they found it. "This is your ground until we hit something worth my opinion. Call the moves and we follow, Ragnar." He set himself into the team's order and waited on the word to advance, the dark ahead swallowing the lamplight whole.
Ragnar gave Zedd a short nod, taking the phaser rifle into his hands but keeping it lowered. "Twenty metres first. Mei-Lin, keep watching the power. Anything changes, tell me." He looked over the others for a moment before turning back towards the corridor. "Keep your spacing. Don't touch anything, don't interfere with anything and keep your weapons down unless I tell you otherwise. If there are drones in here, we don't give them a reason to care about us." He moved out first, slow and careful, the rifle held ready but pointed towards the deck as the light from his suit moved across the Borg structures ahead. Some of the old Starfleet training came back without much thought, checking openings as he passed them, keeping track of where the others were behind him and making sure there was room to move if they suddenly had to. At twenty metres Ragnar stopped and lifted one hand, looking back towards Mei-Lin. "What have you got?"
Mei-Lin stared intently at the readouts, looking for any sort of change. But nothing came up. No changes, no shifts, no blips. Everything looked to be clear so far. She had kept her weapon down as directed and glanced over at Zedd curious if he had done the same. "So far all clear. You're the only new item in my scans ahead. We can move up behind you slowly and increase what we can see ahead if you're good for us to move." She knew she wasn't in a position to give Zedd direction, but at the moment, Ragnar was in charge of it as it was.
That Captain gave a nod "Just say the word."
Ragnar nodded as he moved forward. The Borg cube's dark walls and flickering green lights activated some primal fear...but Ragnar was well versed in pushing emotions down and ignoring them until later. Fear was no different. His eyes studied the walls and he stopped, taking a moment. A good defensive position. "It's clear, for now. When we need to, we fall back here." He did not say he'd hold off any Borg until the rest evacuated, that...well, it was what the 5% was about, wasn't it. Looking back, it might feel like selling himself on the cheap side.
"Copy that" Zedd replied. He setup a small device as a waypoint transmitter, easier to find back to if one got lost in the hallways amongst chaos. An old habit of his.
Mei-Lin ran another scan and found nothing to be concerned about. "We're still clear to move forward. They either haven't detected us or they don't care." She tapped the panel on her arm to check in and see if Avery was tracking them accordingly. "See us alright, Chief?"
“As clear as day, Mei-Lin. Are you seeing any remains of inactive or dead drones? I’m worried that there may be a regeneration cycle running somewhere. Do you see the triangular shaped relays that are evenly spaced in the ceiling? Those are distribution nodes. If you get into trouble, aim your weapons at them and get the hell of there.”
Mei-Lin looked up and around, making note of what Avery had mentioned. "I see a couple, they look offline at the moment. If need be we'll disable them, hopefully we don't go poking the bear anytime soon. If we need emergency transport I'll make sure you're the first to know Chief."
“That will get their attention, for sure. I’m keeping a lock on all of your bio-signs. I can get you out in 10 seconds. Be careful, please. That goes for all of you.”
Tiraa listened from her seat on the bridge. She did not interrupt the conversation happening nor offer her cautions and well wishes; they knew they needed to be careful and didn't need to be distracted. This place made her nervous as it would any sane humanoid who knew of the Borg, but she did her best to keep her focus and stretch her psionic ability out to see if she could sense anything else but the away team on the ship. Realistically she wasn't even sure if she could sense Borg. She had never had the misfortune of stumbling upon them.
Avery had come up to the bridge as soon as Zedd’s team departed the ship. Here he was able to access the upgraded sensors in addition to the away team’s transmissions. In the meantime, the Chief noticed the clear uneasiness in Tirana’s demeanor and posture. Before reaching out to the Captain and the others he put a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
Zedd looked around again and moved up closer to Ragnar, just in case. He was looking at the wall conduits seeing if anything could be leading to something worth their time. He made note of a much larger line running along part of the wall. Whatever it went to, needed either a large power source or one hell of data line. Either way, it has promise.
Ragnar glanced towards Zedd when he moved up beside him, then followed the Captain's attention towards the larger line running along the wall. He studied it for a moment, keeping his phaser rifle lowered as his eyes traced what he could see of its path through the Borg structure. It stood out from the conduits around it, although Ragnar had no intention of guessing what that meant. But he could tell the Captain was interested. He almost sighed with something close to resignation. Curious people would do curious things, and maybe get them all killed. But when you were on a Borg cube, he guessed sanity had already departed. He looked back towards Zedd. "Want a closer look, Captain?"
